Freeware to convert videos to iPod file formats?

I have videos on my computer that I want to iPod touch, and I will not buy from iTunes. Be there is a large amount of software that converts these video files (AVI, MPEG ...) to (s Mp4 or so), but one that works and is really free? Or do one of the websites that becomes a reality? can become popular movies, too? Thanks
