Live: The Concert Event
$18.98 Recorded and filmed for DVD live at the Mandalay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas during Yanni's 2005 world tour, this 65-minute set delivers what you'd expect from a live Yanni album: an eclectic, cinematic fusion of world, new age, and mainstream contemporary pop styles. The 13 songs are, with one exception, drawn from releases dating back to the 1980s ("Keys to the Imagination" having been the title track of his 1986 album) all the way up to the most recent studio effort predating this recording, 2003's Ethnicity (from which three songs are presented). Indeed, a few of these same songs have shown up on previous Yanni concert albums. (The one piece that hadn't shown up on prior Yanni releases, "The Storm," is actually based Antonio Vivaldi's 18th century violin concerto "Summer.") It's well recorded -- on "125 channels of digital audio," according to the back cover -- with a two-dozen-strong cast of supporting musicians in the band and orchestra, plus a couple of vocalists adding the occasional atmospheric singing. The slick drama of both the material and the execution, in fact -- perhaps because of many listeners' associations of Yanni music with the Olympics -- makes you feel as though many of the pieces are introductory fanfares to some spectacular event. For Yanni fans, however, this sort of concert is the spectacular event. ~ Richie Unterberger, All Music GuidePerformers: Pedro Eustache - Duduk, Flute, Reeds, Saxophone; David Hudson - Didjeridu; April Cap - Oboe; Victor Espinola - Harp, Vocals; Ilona Geller - Viola; Jim Mattos - French Horn; Eugene Mechtovich - Viola; Sarah O'Brien - Cello; Charlie Adams - Drums; Michelle Amato - Vocals; Kristen Autry - Violin; Zachary Carrentt |

Event and Repetitions
$15.98 Pinhas' playing, on both guitar and synthesizers, has always had a strange reserve to it, even when he was leader of the powerful, riff-oriented prog rock band Heldon in the mid- to late '70s. He never comfortably assumed the mantle of a rock god, even with his natural advantage of good looks and charisma. Instead, throughout his career he has always seemed more interested in science fiction, electronic music technology, and abstruse philosophical discourse than any kind of popular acclaim. (Pre-Heldon, Pinhas even taught philosophy for a time at the prestigious Sorbonne University in Paris.) After Heldon disbanded, Pinhas made a number of solo recordings in the 1980s and early '90s that were largely hit and miss mixtures of prog rock, misguided future pop, electronic minimalism, and a kind of primitive techno. Guitarist Robert Fripp was one of Pinhas' early heroes and a sporadic but constant thread in Pinhas' music has been his experimentation with guitar feedback, loops, and effects boxes, even in the early days of Heldon, as he tried to perfect his own version of Frippertronics. Well, it has been a long time coming, but Event and Repetitions may well signal the full realization of Pinhas' longtime vision. The drifting, hypnotic patterns of the five pieces on this CD (four of them eight or more minutes in length) have a shimmering beauty and depth that seems to suggest a destination at the end of a long journey -- and perhaps the beginning of a new journey. Although the CD cover proclaims that "all tracks were performed live on guitar direct to digital recorder," many of the background drones and even melody lines have such long sustains that they sound as if they are being played on a huge cathedral organ rather than an electric guitar. The mastery of technology here is not only impressive, but also completely organic. As in much of Fripp's best work, the pieces on the CD are never static and merely repetitive, but rather have a stately, almost glacially slow momentum to them, like the play of Northern Lights or the working of other immense cosmic forces. This music will no doubt be pigeonholed as ambient, or even new age (for whatever use that hopelessly overused term presently serves), but like all art that comes from the deeper parts of the psyche, Event and Repetitions really transcends classification. ~ Bill Tilland, All Music Guide |

The Main Event: Live at the Maple Leaf [Bonus Tracks]
$16.98 This live CD was initially a 500-copy limited edition for local fans, but after those sold out in five days in New Orleans, it graduated to a bigger and broader release. That often signals something special, but this is one case where the music doesn't really transcend the moment -- you can't escape the feeling that you had to be in the club sweating it out with the band that night to feel the magic. Opening with two songs associated with the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, "Blackbird Special" and the R&B staple "It's All Over Now," only shows that ReBirth is still essentially a rawer, less polished version of the DDBB. The latter's studio version of "Blackbird" 20 years ago still beats this one for expertise and vitality, and ReBirth has nothing to match the lethal Roger Lewis-Kevin Harris tandem sax riff machine. ReBirth sounds more like the Dozen when it gets its bad groove thing going on the original "Don't Start No Shit!," complete with what sounds like a variation on Jimi Hendrix's "Who Knows" riff from Band of Gypsys. The centerpiece of The Main Event is a 32-minute title track divided into four sections -- the chop funk drumming on "Tornado Special" sets the groove and ReBirth rides the funky foundation through a series of OK solos. They blend in enough potent groove variations and dynamic shifts to sustain the musical momentum and toss in Mardi Gras Indian chants and bits from "The Roof Is on Fire" to whip up audience response. It's those spots that reveal The Main Event to be more akin to a live go-go record by Trouble Funk than anything. Ride the non-stop rhythm indigenous to a homegrown scene, reference old favorites from local heroes, and toss in familiar chants to cement the audience bond and identification with the sound and scene. ReBirth fans outside New Orleans can enjoy the disc, but at heart the music captured that night was a local thing. [The set's 2005 reissue via Mardi Gras included three bonus tracks.] ~ Don Snowden, All Music GuidePerformers: Keith "Bass Drum Shorty" Frazier - Drums (Bass); Phil Frazier - Tuba; Derrick Tabb - Drums (Snare); Stafford Agee - Trombone; Shamarr Allen - Trumpet; Glen Andrews - Trumpet; Tyrus Chapman - Trombone; |

Apple Juice (Live 81)
$39.99 Although a bit streaky, this is one of Tom Scott's better recordings of the 1980s. A live set with guitarists Eric Gale (whose bluesy playing is a strong asset) and Hugh McCracken, keyboardist Richard Tee, electric bassist Marcus Miller, drummer Steve Gadd and percussionist Ralph MacDonald, Scott sounds fine when playing tenor, although his decision to use the anonymous-sounding lyricon on some numbers is a mistake. Also on the minus side are Dr. John's cameo appearance singing "So White and So Funky," the repertoire in general (which includes four forgettable Scott originals), and some of the less imaginative rhythms. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music GuidePerformers: Dr. John - Vocals; Steve Gadd - Drums; Eric Gale - Guitar; Ralph MacDonald - Percussion; Hugh McCracken - Guitar; Marcus Miller - Bass, Guitar (Bass); Tom Scott - Sax (Tenor), Saxophone; Richard Tee - Keyboards |

Live
$16.98 After 18 years off, everyone knew that Roxy Music's 2001 reunion tour was going to be an event, and by all accounts, it was. But once the thrill of it all wore off, did the band still have anything to say musically? The answer is a resounding yes. Eagle Records' release of the double-CD Live features tracks recorded all over the world, creating a virtual dream concert made from the best-recorded, best-played songs of the 2001 tour. Unfettered by the need to promote an album, Roxy was free to survey their entire career, and it would be hard to come up with a better set list (OK, "Pyjamarama" should have been included). The expanded lineup enables the band to effortlessly re-create everything from Eddie Jobson's violin solos to Eno's treatments and textures, and while the arrangements stick pretty much to the original script, the band really digs into the tunes, and Phil Manzanera and Andy Mackay have never sounded better as soloists. In fact, Manzanera is consistently dazzling every time he steps to the fore, sounding every bit as ferocious and unearthly as he did on their first few albums. Having Paul Thompson back behind the drumkit was vital for the early material, but also adds some needed power to tunes like "My Only Love". Bryan Ferry's voice has weathered just a bit, but he's still the epitome of crooner cool. The sound quality, as expected, is excellent, allowing the listener to hear every musical detail the band offers. Audience participation, the bane of many a live album, is largely held in check until the very end of the set when it intrudes slightly on the encore numbers. But this is a very small quibble about a thoroughly wonderful release. This set should impress those unfamiliar with Roxy and will surely thrill longtime fans. It's a fine testament to this band that these songs sound timeless rather than dated nearly 30 years down the line in many cases. After nearly two decades away, Roxy Music prove that they still have plenty of style and plenty of substance. Recommended. ~ Sean Westergaard, All Music GuidePerformers: Sarah Brown - Vocals (Background); Yanick Etienne - Vocals (Background); Andy Mackay - Oboe, Saxophone; Sharon White - Vocals (Background); Bryan Ferry - Piano, Vocals; Colin Good - Piano, Voices; |

Live!
$11.98 This fine club date features guitarist Jim Hall in Toronto with two of the top Canadian jazzmen, bassist Don Thompson and drummer Terry Clarke. The interplay between the three players is sometimes wondrous, and although the five selections are all familiar standards (such as "'Round Midnight," "Scrapple From the Apple" and "The Way You Look Tonight"), Hall makes the music sound fresh and full of subtleties. This enjoyable LP has yet to be reissued on CD. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music GuidePerformers: Terry Clarke - Drums; Jim Hall - Guitar; Clark Terry - Drums; Don Thompson Quartet - Bass, Bass (Acoustic); Don Thompson - Bass |
